Written by Vivienne Halleux (1st edition). On 17 November 2021, the European Commission tabled a legislative proposal aimed at curbing deforestation and forest degradation driven by the expansion of agricultural land used to produce specific commodities, namely cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, soya and wood. Following up on a 2020 European Parliament resolution, which called for…

I successfully completed a “No Buy January”. What’s this? No Buy doesn’t mean one will not spend any money at all. One can set up their own allowed/not allowed expenses, that can also be allowing x number of items / months, rather than going cold turkey and avoid buying any books at all for a whole year, for example.
My approach is to go 1 No Buy Month at the time and see if I can make it to a whole year. My rules are:
Allowed:
– bills, food, fuel, house cleaning;
– 2 takeaways/month;
– 1 audiobook/month: this also helps me read the books I already have and haven’t read yet 😉
– £100 buffer for emergencies
Not allowed:
– new notebooks and stationery: I have enough already, I need to use them;
– new clothes/shoes: mend and if mending is not possible and the item is definitely not usable anymore then yes, buy a replacement;
– plants: my little balcony is at full capacity. I love my plants, so for now I will focus on taking care of the ones I have and saw a few veggies for the season, but no new plants or seeds are needed, I have enough already.
I generally avoid Amazon. If anything needs to be bought, I look elsewhere first. Another rule of thumb I use is for cleaning supplies: I like to have 1 in use and 1 spare. When the one in use runs out and I start using the spare, I buy 1 to keep as spare. This way I avoid hoarding, but I also avoid the inconvenience of running out of something when I really need it. This is a little thing, but I think it can make one feel less restricted with buying and not like they’re depriving themselves of stuff they actually need.
So far Janaury went well. I didn’t feel restricted and I’ve been much more conscious with my spending, e.g. the 2 takeaways/month. Takeaways can be a bit of a pitfall with lockdowns and working from home. Takeaway deliveries can be so tempting. I do have a few favourite places I would go to if they were open as usual and not just click&collect or delivery. But I’m also trying to eat healthier, while not making the change feel like a punishment. Then, little steps like these seem to help. We’ll see how this goes as the year progresses… I have happily saved quite a bit in Janaury already. I think the contrast is even starker because of the holiday season and the spending for presents etc… it’s easy to get stuck into the spiral of spending. January was a good month and motivated me to keep making progress with the No Buy lifestyle. On to February now 🙂
Have you ever tried a No Buy month? Some do a Low Buy instead. The principles are similar. The bottom line is becoming more concious of our spending habits. The flexibility of setting your own rules for allowed/not allowed expenses is a very good approach, I think, that makes you reflect on what we consider healthy habits or what is causing us stress. Ultimaltely, No Buy or Low Buy lifestyles are not about becoming an ascetic monk. They are about being conscious about what we invest our finances in and focusing on what makes us feel good.

Somehow, this lockdown has turned into an opportunity to rediscover my interest in growing plants. Any plant. Essentially, I just like planting seeds and see if they germinate. This may sound a bit silly, but day after day for the past couple of months I took care of a number of seedlings and seing them […]
